Kuwagata was born in Yanxia in the year 1514, the only son of Mukade of the Ryuo clan, a samurai retainer of a Yuzuka clan lord from Doma. His mother was a stubborn old woman who refused to marry, a proud samurai who would not give away her legacy easily. In her late 30s she married a silk merchant from a humble silkworms farmers family, who would benefit of joining into her clan.
His father passed away from an illness when Kuwagata was very young, so he was mostly raised by his mother and his father's family. His mother arranged a marriage with the renowned Kajiyashiki clan of swordsmiths before Kuwagata was born, to secure that the Ryuo legacy will be kept in good hands. When Kuwagata turned 16, his mother passed the retainer duty to him and he adopted his adult name 'Kuwagata' (meaning 'stag beetle'). Two years later he married his fiancee, Hotarubi.
Kuwagata and Hotarubi grew up together, she was like a big protective sister to young Kuwagata.
They had a son, Ryumaro -who would later adopt the name Akitsu. Kuwagata loved his son more than anything, and trained him in the samurai ways just as his mother did before him, and passed on his retainer duty to young Akitsu when he turned 15.
He was so blindly proud of his son that he didn't notice young Akitsu's struggling with keeping up with the family's expectations...On that same year, that is 25 years prior to ARR, the Garlean Empire invaded Doma. Akitsu was called to fight for his lord, while Kuwagata and Hotarubi stayed to protect their village from the imperials. The only thing that returned to them was Akitsu’s katana broken in half…Kuwagata completely broke down, his son’s death drowned him in guilt. He blamed himself for pushing his son into becoming a samurai, for placing such a hard duty on his young shoulders...He even considered taking his own life to go with his son, but…he couldn’t. Committing seppuku would have only dishonored his son’s memory. He had nothing to be punished for, on the contrary, he as a father should have been proud of it, as it was the most honorable death a samurai could have had. But he couldn't accept that. Visions of an injured Akitsu, captured by the imperials, tormented him day and night (he didn't know that it was the Echo).Hotarubi although, she was sure that Kuwagata's visions were the will of the kami guiding them, telling them that their son was still alive. Staying in Doma would only end up with both dead or worse, so she took his grieving husband with her and fled to Hingashi. Settled near Kugane, Hotarubi took any job she could to provide for her family and helping any Doman refugees while looking for info about Akitsu. Over time, Kuwagata got some of his spirit back to take care of the house and work and his aging wife, although the grief for his son never left him.Years passed, and Hotarubi grew old and fragile. In her last moments, she made Kuwagata promise to her that he would go find their son. That she was sure Akitsu was alive somewhere, and Kuwagata shouldn’t live the rest of his life in regret. She made him promise her that he would live, for her and for their son. Kuwagata promised he would honor her wish. After the proper mourning period, Kuwagata found out that some Doman refugees had fled to Eorzea, so he decided to travel there. The rest of it it's just Kuwagata coincidentally being in the right place at the right moment. He didn't have any interest in politics, so he just followed Alphinaud around while he was looking for info on his son. He asked around in every city he had been, but no hints of him...although he had always known his son was gone. But he did it anyway, because he promised his wife.
After his wife's passing, Kuwagata never intended to find love again.
But then, he met Ameliance and he completely fell in love with her at first sight. At first he was absolutely mortified about his feelings -so improper, to think about a married woman, about half his age, and mother of the twins he loves so much!!Ameliance was so eager to meet the Warrior of Light her children had told her so much about in their letters. She wasn't pursuing romance either, although she wasn't happy with her marriage with Fourchenault.
They started meeting like friends at first (casual meetings pushed by two scheming twins who fully supported the romance between their mom and their sort-of-adopted grandpa).
Kuwagata was just like Ameliance imagined: strong but gentle, a kind friend and a caring fatherly figure for her children, and also a very cute man to have fun teasing.Kuwagata made no romantic advances on Ameliance -he was settled on admiring her from a distance, even after knowing about her and Fourchenault's divorce.
But before leaving to find Meteion, he asked her on a date--not actually a date, just a dinner between friends!, or so he said. Just to repay all the kindness she had shown to him. Ameliance agreed, curious about how a date with this cute old man would be.
The date was a success: they had a perfect romantic dinner, and they kissed under the moonlight. They started officialy dating after that. Ameliance enjoys being doted on for a change, and Kuwagata still can't believe that his crush loves him back.
